BEHIND THE SCENE

Sunrise reflections at Vermillion Lakes in Banff National Park - Alberta - Canada.

One of the first rules we learn in photography is the “Rule of Thirds.”

The idea is to always frame your subject in one-third of the image, to make the composition more dynamic and interesting.

Our eye is naturally drawn into the centre of the image. If the subject is right there, in the centre, the image is too immediate and we lose interest faster.

If the composition subject is not in the centre then our brain needs to think and send an impulse to our eyes. Our eyes have to move and refocus, to find the subject. This boosts our curiosity and enhances our image perception.

Some rules are made to be broken, however! When photographing reflections, I like to have my subject and the horizon line directly in the centre, to achieve perfect symmetry.
